Caddo Lake.

Beautiful place with beautiful nature in the middle of beautiful nowhere.
If you like "wild" places it is definitely the one!

This time we decided to try something different and we booked the camp place in Caddo Lake State Park for two nights. I was really worried about the temperature at this time of the year. It is the end of May, it is already pretty hot in Houston, what kind of weather to expect at the distance of 4.5 hours of driving...
Pros. I worried in vain. The campsite was under the trees and the air temperature during the night was OK to sleep outside without any extra air conditioning. The neighbors were so quiet during the nights so you could not even realize the park' camping was full of people. Last, but not least, the place is safe. I mean, at least it feels like you are not in any kind of danger.
Cons. Insects are everywhere. We took a few mosquito candles to burn. It helped a bit.
The level of water in the lake was raised after the rains so the park did not offer the canoe for rent. The only thing to do in the park was under the threat not to happen.

Johnson's Ranch, the oldest marina on Caddo Lake, saved whole our trip. It was the only place where we could rent a canoe. After the flooding and as a result higher water level, most places did not start to offer their services yet. We were lucky to find at least one place!
If you are looking something rusty, cranky, old and creepy, it is a deffinately your place! There is no hint of luxury, shiny and polished modernity.
Cool place with cool people. We forgot cash, the marina staff did not accept any cards as payment due to destruction after the flooding. So we paid just a part of the amount for the renting of 2 canoes with the promise to bring money tomorrow.

We planned to spend at least 4 hours on the lake with the canoe. Our trip, unfortunately, ended after 1.5 hours. Because of my daughter and I with all our stuff rolled over in a boat. The cooler with sandwiches, my photo bag with the photo camera flew into the water... We definitely need to practice how to "ride" a canoe as a team.
Once again our trip has been saved with a guided tour on a proper boat.
